| Sabrina is one year old and weighs only 40 lbs. She was hit by a car on January 19 on a busy street in Sioux City, Iowa. She was picked up and taken to Animal Control, where she was held while waiting for her owners to appear. She might have spent the obligatory seven days there in pain and then euthanized, were it not for volunteers from a local humane group, Noah's Hope Animal Rescue. Sheila, one of the volunteers, was able to persuade those in charge to release Sabrina so that she could get medical care. Once Sabrina was being taken care of, Sheila contacted Dalmatian Rescue of Illinois. |

| The veterinarian in Sioux City gave her pain medication, IV fluids, and took x-rays. The accident had caused multiple pelvic fractures, as well as abrasions and lacerations. No owners turned up to claim this pretty little Dal. We agreed to take Sabrina into rescue. On Saturday, January 23, three courageous volunteers, from Noah's Hope and Dalmatian Rescue, drove through the fog to transport Sabrina from Sioux City to Aurora, Illinois. Sabrina was taken straight to VCA Aurora Animal Hospital. |
On Monday, January 25, Dr. Steven Abel, a board-certified veterinary surgeon, repaired her pelvis with multiple pins and plates, avoiding the femoral head ostectomy that we first thought might be necessary. Sabrina is now in one of our foster homes, receiving round-the-clock care. She is wearing a special vest and leg sling to help keep her surgery site immobile. Doctor's orders: very restricted activity for the next four weeks. No running, jumping, or rough playing! A full recovery is expected. |
